Summer has arrived and so did an earthquake

Summer is in full swing now and with the fluctuating temperatures we also had an earthquake that registered 5.0. Everything shook here since we were only about 50 km from the epicenter. We have had previous quakes that barely shook the house more than when a large truck goes speeding up the road but this one was different. Everything shook so badly and just did not stop for what seemed like a long time. Fortunately we did not suffer any damages although the bricks around our fire pit did shift somewhat and now we will rebuild it before we use it again. All in all, it looks like no one was hurt and damage was minimal. Thank goodness.

Spring in Canada

Spring has definitely arrived in Canada. Over the past week the Ottawa area saw record breaking temperatures of over 34C and at the same time, it was snowing in Alberta. Flowers are trying to bloom everywhere but between the heat and snow they were having a hard time. However, like us hardy Canadians, our plants all persevere and do show their beauty. The only thing I can say is that due to the amount of bugs that return every spring, I do miss winter a bit. Personally I would rather shovel snow than endure all the mosquito, black fly, deer fly, horse fly, and whatever else bites as well as bee, hornet, and wasp stings. Don't get me wrong, I do enjoy all of our changing seasons, I love to be able to pick my lilacs, roses and lavender to bring them into the house, but I really could do with a few less bugs.

Beef Stew

OK, here it is, takes a few hours to make though, but is worth every minute.

In a large pot:
1 pound of stew beef (or your chosen type of meat)
3 tablespoons of HP Sauce
3 tablespoons of Lea & Perrins Worcestershire Sauce
1 large onion, peeled
pepper (I do not use salt but you can if you like - totally not necessary)
1 teaspoon ground ginger (this keeps the onion from coming back on you)

Add water just until meat is covered, stir well and simmer over medium heat
until it just almost cooks dry, but make sure to stir often. I remove the onion but you can just cut it up if you prefer.

Add about 10 medium, peeled potatoes - quartered, carrots and any other veggies you like. Cover with water and boil for about an hour or until all veggies are cooked.

To make the gravy, I take out as much of the meat and veggies as possible to make it easy. Add this mixture - make sure it is blended well to avoid lumps or strain it as you add it:
1 cup cold water
1 pinch of salt
1/2 cup of flour
Stir with wisk or fork as you add it slowly. Bring just to a boil. Return meat and veggies to pot and simmer over medium heat for another 10 minutes, stirring often.

Serve and enjoy. I often microwave some for a quick snack or next day's lunch.

2010 Winter Olympics in Canada

Here is my son with the torch bearer in our town.

The Winter Olympics are about to start here in Canada. As I do not live in British Columbia I will have to settle for watching them on the television. My brother-in-law's band is playing at the torch lighting site in Hope and one of our neices is working on the Olympic organizing committee. I hope that they send us lots of pictures since they will be so close to the action. I am eagerly waiting to see the Canadian athletes do their best on home ground. You never know, perhaps there will be a gold medal match or two between Canada's and the United States' hockey teams again. We will be glued to the TV for those games for sure. Hockey just seems to be in every Canadian's blood. My sons and husband watch it more than I but who does not like to watch a few great games between the best teams in the world. Win or lose, the Olympics are certainly TV worth watching.

Easter Weekend

Well it is Easter Weekend and I have been very busy. Made cinnamon buns for my family, took most of a day. Will be cooking a ham and scallop potatoes for dinner on Monday. Love to cook but it keeps me away from the computer and working on my business.

The weather has finally become sunny for a change and we are also spending more time outside.

I really do like to work at home and spend more time with my family than I ever could being out at a 'job' on a daily basis.

It is also very nice to meet new people and learn new things everyday.
